Allow me to share my brief saga with my defective Hondata ECU...

Cliff notes:
-I got a defective Hondata ECU
-Their tech support sucks
-I fixed the ECU without their help
-TPS isn't that important, car runs fine without it

So about 5-6 years ago I traded Dropspeed my HIDs for a Hondata s200 (thanks Tom Payn for the sponsor tune). This whole time I have had a fault code for TPS sensor. I calibrated multiple sensors and still a fault. Yesterday, I finally got fed up and decided to get to the bottom of it. (heres to procrastination: )

After ruling out TPS sensors (have 3) & wiring harness, I came down to ECU. I posted my issue on the Hondata forums, and didn't really get anywhere with their help there. So I called their tech support and ended up talking to the same guy from the forums. Matt aka spunkdumpster. The name fits. The guy was completely uninterested in helping me despite his consistent yet worthless replies online.

He made it overly clear that I was way out of warranty (understandable) but didn't show a lick of interest that their ECUs may have manufacturing defects.

Well the problem was that the OBDii -> OBDi adapter (red jumper PCB) they have built in their ECUs was bad/wrong/defective. My TPS signal didn't go anywhere once it entered the ECU. Long story short, I used the Helms ECU I/O pinout, followed the foil traces, and jumpered the pin to the correct location on the Honda PCB (analog/digital converter IC).

Now my TPS is working properly, and I am The car was still fast and still made 185@wheels on Mustang w/ just bolt ons and stock cam timing. This is with the TPS signal defaulted to 26%. So basically, it doesn't do much!!

The End.

Here's some pics (also notice shitty rivet job on fet heatsink. Nice manufacturing guys!

"Thank you for calling Hondata, calls may be recorded. If you know the extension of the party you'd like to reach, dial it now. Hondata does not sell to the public, a dealer list can be found on our website. Please f*ck off."

Is what their phone menu should say.

Great post Ed.
Looks like they didn't even de-flux the red PCB... sloppy work.

I'd consider reworking that heat sink, a flat and solid vibration resistant connection with fresh thermal grease.

To be more proactive with my commenting... I should say: I know for a fact that Hondata doesn't manufacture the ECUs themselves - they are purchased ECUs - which means they are not responsible for the "poor rivetry" you have pointed out.

I know they don't. I asked them if they could ask for the correct adapter PCB from their manufacturer for me so I could install it. Idiot just kept saying its not under warranty and I have to buy a new ECU.

What do you expect for a 6 year old, out of warranty, ECU?

He didn't say he wanted it for free, he just wanted the correct parts. You'd think they'd try to help him out, because when you don't, things like this happen. After reading this, I'd be more likely to sway towards other tuning options because of their apparent lack of support once you are out of warranty.

Yeah, but you guys forget that Matt is my friend and there's not much I can say without either being labeled as an idiot myself, or without people accusing me of liking Hondata just because he's my friend.

All I know is that Matt is one of the best people I know. He's one of the most genuine and I know that he is, in fact, trying to help people when they call. Everyone has their own gripes about customers, so you have to cut him some slack at some point here. In the case of this ECU, it might have been one of the prototype ECUs from WAY back in the day - hence the shotty craftsmanship. By the way, that company still owes Hondata money - so that says even more.

Plus, I don't think it's fair that when one person says, "Hondata would not help me out," it causes lots of other people to possibly/automatically assume they're being told the whole story by said person, and possibly/automatically decide that they, too, do not like Hondata, when they may not have even used the product themselves.

I, for one, have had 2 different s300's and have never had a problem with either of them. I know others who have loved theirs as well. Obviously, Hondata has a good product, or it wouldn't still be on the market.

That's all I have to say for now, because I probably just looped it all around - my mind is elsewhere, I have to go work on my car now.

There is no way in hell he was trying to be helpful when I called.

If you read his responses to people on the forums, you will notice that he does respond to all questions, but almos always briefly, and with annoyance or condescension. He was the exact same way on the phone.

I realize that tech support probably gets a lot of stupid calls and questions and they may have answered some a thousand times, but when I try to explain that my ECU is defective and ask for tech info/help to repair it, he wasn't interested at all, just indirectly telling me to buy an ECU, or fuck off.

I think he just wanted info on how to DIY repair it...not looking for a free replacement.

Funny this came up... Lately I've had some major issues with my Hondata ECU...

So... I have been running Hondata S300 for about 2 years now and hadn't updated the firmware/software for about that time. I relize that there are many new features in the new software and decided it was time to upgrade.

After re-flashing my ECU and re-installing my old MAP my car was completely un-drivable. The ECU was completly scrambled.

I fussed with my MAP for about 3 hours to see if there was something obvious I was missing but in the end I had to simply start with a fresh MAP and copy all my tables over.

This got the car running but what I noticed was that the fuel curves were not giving me the same A/F as the same MAPs with the old ECU firmware.

So I've been spending the last few days re-tuning my car (I run with a PLX R500 WB 02 sensor in the car) on the street and have almost got the car back to the same state of tune as before... but ultimately this will require another trip back to the dyno to finish things off.

Not very impressed....
