What have they said about the splines on the input shaft? It is odd that the splines on the clutch disk get damaged w/o any to the input shaft as well.

Im not sure , h diddnt mention it , so im sure its ok , but id agree with you , it makes plenty of sense what your saying .

Luckily I listened to the wife so we only have to fly in to drive back instead of doing what you will be doing. The flight back was so relaxing compared to the 13 hour drive...
